Part A: Annual Report

Director's Message:

The Center continues to promote best practices in transportation infrastructure development and maintenance, with emphasis on safety and security. As a result, regional initiatives are underway to address the issues that our aging infrastructure and current state of security challenge us with. As we build upon the strong foundation that has been established over the first years of operation, the Center continually looks forward to furthering its mission.

A well-rounded portfolio of research projects include Biohazard Detection and Security of Critical Transportation Infrastructure, Advanced Infrastructure Condition Monitoring and Nondestructive Testing, Identifying Research Development and Training for Oil and Gas Pipeline Safety and Security, Operation Improvement at Traffic Circles, and Transportation Safety Professional Development Clearinghouse. Involvement in such projects reflects the Center’s commitment to a broad-based, far-reaching approach to infrastructure preservation and advancement.

In its fifth year, CAIT has moved forward in securing its position as a multi-modal transportation infrastructure research and education organization, having transformed into a well-known, highly respected operation in the areas of safety, mobility, economic growth, environment, and security. This may be evidenced in the willingness of stakeholders to make such grand commitments as the funding for the new CAIT building, whose groundbreaking was proudly held in February 2004. Furthermore, another significant success is the newly established Transportation Safety Resource Center, a symbol of University/Agency partnership between the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Rutgers University, CAIT, and the Federal Highway Administration. This new program will complement the existing activities at the Center by advancing the commitment to traffic safety concerns at the local levels in the State. The value of partnerships and support from professional organizations, legislators, University leadership, and industry, as well as fellow educators, transportation professionals, and the broad based customer group that utilizes CAIT’s many resources, has proven to be the lifeline for the Center’s expansion.

Theme of CAIT:

The theme of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) is maintenance and operation of high volume transportation infrastructure systems.  It is the goal of CAIT to be a catalyst for creating a multi-modal transportation infrastructure research and education paradigm that incorporates input from members of the TIS community.  The Center will be active in TIS education, research, and technology transfer in the critical areas of safety, mobility, economic growth, human and natural environment, and national security; (envisioned by USDOT in the recently published USDOT Research and Development Plan.) The unique feature of the Center will be its focus on implementation of advanced and cutting-edge technologies, from broad and interdisciplinary sou
