CAIT is one of five National University Transportation Centers, an elite group of academic research institutions that are sanctioned and supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Specific Gravity Test

AASHTO T 228  test is used to find the specific gravity of the asphalt binder.

Because the specific gravity of asphalt binders changes with temperature, these tests are useful in making volume corrections based on temperature. The specific gravity at 15.6°C (60°F) is commonly used when buying/selling asphalt cements. A typical specific gravity for asphalt is around 1.03.
